POEM STARTER

Write a simplified sestina with any theme you think fits in the form.

A sestina has 6 stanzas of 6 lines, and the final word of each stanza should be important, and appear in the next stanza along. Begin with these basic rules, but you can also look up and try all the complex rules of a sestina!

To Hope And Friends

Embrace me,

For I am an escapist

Who never fails

To belong

In the wrong

Places.

I am so used to my freedom.

So much so, that choices

Tie me down to consequences

That I asked for in good

Consciousness;

Knowing me—

I asked for flowers

And was met with rain.

When will I grow up?

I’ve been soaked in blessings

But my root rot

I could never seem to cure.

Bloom where you’re planted…

But staying in one place

For too long hinders

Me.

Frightens me.

I am afraid

That to be seen is to be known

For all the good and bad in between.

I want you to know the good “me”

Perfectly.

Not long enough to see

The parts that I think are the worst.

Will you let me fall apart

And keep holding me?

Keep me in your cupped hands

Even as I disintegrate

Into nothing

Amidst my ongoing quest for freedom?
