POEM STARTER

Write an elegy about the death of something other than a person.

An elegy is a sad poem, traditionally expressing sorrow for someone who has passed away.

Fire At The Farm

I didn’t know you all that well,

But nobody deserves that hell.

You were a client but I could see,

A man proud of his family.

Sarcasm seeping through your smile,

With your simplistic, no fuss style.

Your three boys loved you, clear as day.

Your wife must miss you everyday.

I let you deduct that plane,

Sometimes wonder am I to blame.

If I said no, would that protect,

The start of this butterfly effect.

You were flying with your son,

Countless times, but it just takes one.

A wire hanging, an oversight.

A crash causing the locals all a fright.

Your eldest in seat next to you,

I can’t imagine what you went through.

Your middle son, I understand,

Bravely pulled you out with hands.

Too late though, the damage done.

The reaper claiming two for one.

Taking two men with impunity,

Two makers of community.

My daughter born the next day after,

Sometimes when I hear her laughter.

I think of you and your cattle station,

And hope that there is reincarnation.
