POEM STARTER

‘Leaving room for errors always seems wise, until there are mistakes sleeping on every sofa in your house.’

Write a poem that begins with this line.

In the Air

Leaving room for errors seems wise.

Until errors sleep on every sofa in your house,

Like beer-drunk men

And wine-drunk girls,

Empty handles of vodka,

And crushed cans.

Leaving room for errors seems wise

Until your errors stick to the walls,

Paint over peeling paper,

Paper over chipping paint.

Like your own shadow,

Following you,

Haunting you,

Never letting you rest,

Never letting you forget.

Leaving room for errors seems wise

Until you cannot breathe,

But for all the errors in the air.
