STORY STARTER

Write a romance story that takes place in a grocery store.

Try not to write this as a single scene, but consider how a romance could unfold over time in such a public space.

Falling On Aisle Four

There she was again. She was glowing and I could hear the heavens singing. The heavens being that harsh oversaturated LED light that gave off a soft hum overhead. I had seen her at only once before at a store across town, but we only had a passing moment of eye contact as we passed eachother in that store’s threshold to the outside.

Suddenly my feet were stuck, I was cascading quickly towards the floor. Fwomp!

“Oww ooh” I exclaimed, sharply inhaling from the pain on the back of my ankles.

“I told you before, it’s your fault if you’re in front of the cart. Don’t blame me that your ankles got hit. And get off the floor, they probably don’t mop in here” Victoria sneered down at me before pushing her cart past me and into the produce section.

That was my fiancée alright. My close friends told me I was making a mistake, but I couldn’t just leave such an assertive and blunt woman. Besides, she was nice when we first started dating.

“Here, take my hand.” A voice called out. I looked up from my aching foot to see the mysterious woman was now standing over me. Her arm extended down to me reaching to help me back to my feet. I reached out, feeling like that one painting from Michael Angelo where the heavens reached down to the earth. I don’t know, I didn’t take any art history classes.

“Thank you. Here I have some hand sanitizer.” I offered, knowing my hands that had been on the floor likely polluted her gentle and kind hands.

“Thanks. Ooh, that’s my favorite scent. You’ve got good taste.” She remarked as we both wiped our hands clean. “Well, have a good day.” She turned and began walking away.

“Anytime! I-you too!” I stuttered a response out nervously. That could have gone better.

As I stood alone in the entrance of the grocery store. I looked ahead to see two aisles to go down. One was the life I had and a future of uncertainty and monotony. The other was canned vegetables and a mysterious yet kind woman. I let out a sight, grabbed the shopping list from my back pocket and trotted on to the produce aisle.
