The Ghost Tower
“Ready?” A boy in black whispered in the tent. He was William, my friend. As I peaked out of the tent through the slight opening of the door, I could see a multitude of tents surrounding us, with trees around the entire area. The sky was in the shade of deep blue with tiny points of light glittering like diamonds scattered across the sky, the new moon out of sight. But this wasn’t just any night, it was the night…the night they all talked about.
“Give me a sec…” I said to my friend, and pulled opened the tent door before stepping out onto the outside grass. The slight breeze of the wind was whispering beside my ears, brushing against my skin every now and then, and the whole camping area was silent, no one in sight. All I could hear were the low croaks of bull frogs from the nearby lake and the chirps of crickets in the distance. As the wind whispered, I counted and tried to make out the tempo…’This is it. The right beats.’ I thought. It was time to see if the myths were true. “Hey..Hey! Willi! Come out! The sky’s in a shade of deep blue, millions of stars scattered across the sky, new moon, no hazy band of the Milky Way, and, the wind’s following a tempo. Quick! Before it’s too late!” I whispered in a flash.
Upon hearing that, William rushed out of the tent as soon as possible, with his backpack ready. Then, we set off into the woods. After looking at the compass and walking for about half an hour, we finally found our way to the place. As we walked into the hazy whiteness of the fog, I couldn’t help but feel moist air clinging to my hair and clothing. There was an unnatural and strange quietness here, with damp, earthy scents filling every corner the fog crept and filled up. As we looked up, we saw a tall dark building with only three windows and chipped of edges and walls towering over us.
“Oh my…this..is this…the tower..?” William said in shock, his jaw dropping as low as it could go. My eyes widened each second I stood there, thinking I was blind. I rubbed my eyes over and over again. It was real! The myth was true! There’s really a tower that appears only on this night! “In the myth, it says that ‘whoever entered the ghost tower never came out, BEWARE!’ Are you sure you want to go in? This…it looks more terrifying from the picture…no offense”
“Oh don’t be a party pooper! Of course we’re going in! The fun has only just started!” I said in excitement and dragged him along side me nearer and Nearer to the path that lead to the door.
“Uhh, I don’t know, Jake. I don’t think this is a good idea. The windows are literally reflecting light out of the house! There’s someone in there! I don’t want to-“
“Well then, that makes the myth sound even better! We should write about our little adventure here in the tower once we get out, give ourselves a story to share, you know?” I said with a skip in my step.
“If we’ll even get out…” William whispered softly to himself. I didn’t answer him though, and kept dragging him along with me up the steep path to the door. “Just three more steps…” Then, we were here, right infront of the door. It was three times our size, with a brown rusted door handle in place. It looked as if it hadn’t been touched for a century, but for some reason, there was people in the tower. I put my ear to the door, trying to detect for any noise in the tower, and there there was, distinct chattering in the tower.
“There’s people here..” I whispered calmly to William. “Let’s go in!”
“No-“ William blurted, and without a second thought, I swung the door open and barged in, just to find that the tower was empty. The chattering, it was gone. Nothing or nobody was here. The place was just a roar of silence.
“Wait what?! I swore I could have heard talking!” I shouted in despair. “Come out. Now! Whoever who’s here, stop hiding! You better come out or else!”
“Dude, maybe you were just imagining things. Come on! Let’s just leave this place before anything else happens!” William said quickly, his legs trembling.
“Fine, fine. Since you’re such a scaredy cat, we’ll leave, and maybe I am really imagining things.” I said as I rolled my eyes. But as we turned around, we didn’t see the door, but the white thick coloured wall that went all the way up to the ceiling. I looked around frantically, searching for the door, but I just couldn’t see any doorway anymore. “The door’s vanished!” William looked at me in horror and I saw his eyes fill with terror. We were both staring at each other in disbelief, confusion and terror all at once.
“What have you done..Jake…?” He whispered, his hands touching and feeling the walls frantically for a way out. Then, I saw his eyeballs moving upwards ti’ll his pupils were gone with only shades of white taking over his eyes. Right after, he started to scream in terror and scratched the walls as every bone in his body cracked hard and loud, I could hear it. “OML I’ve made a mistake, please god, PLEASE! End his suffering! I deserve this more than William!”I shouted to myself, hands clasped together. His bone cracked and crushed against each other with every second that passed, with him screeching in pain and his body changing and deciphering spontaneously.
I prayed harder, hoping it to stop, and then, all of a sudden the screaming and bone crushing from him and his body had stopped. He was now crying and weeping, body turned towards a corner while covering his face from view. I walked up to him and asked “Shit Willi. I’m so so so so so SO sorry that this had to happen to you. It’s all my fault, but now the pain has stopped…are you ok?” He didn’t answer and kept crying. “Willi, are you ok? Answer, me.” Still, no answer, just crying noises that filled the entire tower.
“William Huns, I said, are you ok?” The screaming turned into screeches. Then, as I put my hand on his shoulder, he suddenly stopped screeching, put down his hands and sat up straight. After a moment or two, he slowly cracked his neck and turned to me 180 degrees without moving his body. I swear, the cracking sounded horrible, and oh god…his eyeballs…they were now red and BLEEDING! The blood flowed down his cheek and onto the floorboards, it looked terrifying, I wanted to turn back and run, but just I couldn’t. There was no way out.
He smiled and grinned at me with and evil grin. ‘Could he possibly be possessed by a spirit..? Now’s not the time to think about this, now’s the time to turn around and-‘ Before I could think about my next move, he grabbed me by my wrist. His hand, it was bleeding furiously from his palm. “LET GO OF ME!” I tried to swing my hand out of his grasp, but after countless times of trying, his hands were still holding on tightly to my wrist, not letting go. I pulled and pulled at his fingertips, but he was too strong, too powerful, something felt awfully wrong. He didn’t used to have this much strength. Then, his other hand reached out for my other wrist, and before I could say anything, he started to force me up the stairs of the tower. “BLOODY HELL, WILLIAM. CAN’T YOU JUST LET GO?!” I screamed in terror. He didn’t look like William anymore, but a feisty terrifying creature with bloody eyes, hands and feet, cracking his bones every time he forced me up a step, and somehow, his neck managed to grow two times the normal size of a human’s neck, or maybe three. The bone cracking was so loud, it echoed through the walls and into my ears. It sounded so horrible. No matter how hard I tried, I still couldn’t get out of his grasp. Now all I could do is see what he was gonna do to me, and follow his lead. I guess I had given up.
As we were walking up the stairs, I couldn’t help but hear a myriad of whispers that grew louder every time we got closer to the top. It was as if millions of people were here tonight.’Could there be people upstairs..? No, I’m just crazy. This ghost tower is named the ghost tower for a reason.’ I know I sounded stupid and crazy, but that right now was the only possible explanation. “How long are we gonna take to reach the top?! It’s taking forever!” I shouted up the stairs. Then, William growled at me furiously.
As we reached the top, I realised that no one was there. Just a lamp on a table, with two stacks of papers piled up on both sides, and a pen on the table as well that I had just realised was there. As William, or the creature, let go of me, I quickly rushed to the door…but too late. I saw the door on that level slam shut and dissolve slowly into thin air, creating a wall barrier. I hit on it as hard as I could, and I felt a droplet of tear rush down my forehead. The wall was unbreakable.
Then, I turned around to the creature, but it too had vanished or gone in the wind. William was gone, all because of me…I messed up.’There should be something I could do with those papers, right?’I thought to myself, before walking over to the table with trembling hands. One stack contained of continuous pieces of blank memory notes, while the other was piled up high with the memory notes as well, but with different handwritings on each one. I took out the bottom most oldest, and one of the first, memory notes written by someone. It bore the name ‘Sade Olivander’…”Wait a minute…wasn’t this the first name that was found in the book, Ghost Tower Myth?” I gasped in disbelief, staring at her name for as long as I could. “Sade…she was the first person who got lost near this place according to the myth! So this…all of this…it’s not a dream..? This is actually real. And I made a mistake. Oh shit-“ I looked at the note, the room, the note, the door, and then at the note once again. “But no. It can’t be…right? Please tell me I’m not gonna die…Please..PLEASE!”
My hand was shaking fiercely, my head spinning more as ever, and after a moment, I found myself crying. Then, I let go of the note and put it back under the stack with trembling hands. My entire body shook in trepidation, and I held my body as tightly as I could, my heart racing. “Calm down..Jake.C-calm down. W-w-write on one p-paper before you die, alright? No wait, you’re not gonna die, you’re just gonna be…p-put to sleep..” I said to myself before grabbing onto the pen on the table and taking a new sheet of memory card from the new stack, penning down every single thing I regret and loved, but my trembling hands were slowing me down every time I tried to write something. The more I wrote, the more I shook, and the more I cried and whimpered. Droplets of tears were getting on my paper, but I didn’t care, I just kept writing, until I was done…
