Gray Character In A Wheelchair
A 50-year-old man gets admitted to the hospital for a chest cold. Lying in the hospital bed,he starts getting pains in his chest. He buzzes for the nurse ,no-show. The pain is getting more intense. He can’t really move, terrible pain!. It’s coming from his chest
The man tries to get up, he falls off the bed. His alarm goes off. Flatlining. He’s dead! Doctors
and nurses rush in. Using the paddles to try to bring him back to life. They revive him!. He was dead for eight minutes before the doctors got a heartbeat.
It left him with damage to the cortex of his brain. He lost mobility in his legs. He now cannot walk, eat, without help.He is a big man about 6 feet tall about 300 pounds. He is 50 years old.It also affected his speach. He could only garble his words. It’s hard to understand him, but you learn to distinguish what he saying .Physical therapists, speech therapist come to the house five times a week.
I cook for him as well. That is the only highlight of his day. He sits in his chair and anxiously waits for his food. The aide puts a plastic bib around his neck so all the food doesn’t spill on his clothing. It’s very sad to stay home all day. The television is your best friend.
He used to be a happy go lucky guy. Always joking, always laughing. His total demeanor changed. Medically, he has no memory of yesterday, and short term memory of today. Its part of his brain damage.
It’s unbelievable, but this man will never complain about his disability. But, every couple of months as he’s watching television, I see a tear streaming down his face. I pretend I don’t notice..
I know this man well. I’ve been working for him since he came home from the rehab. It breaks my heart to see him this way. Unable to go to the bathroom himself. Needs an aide to clean him up. I even have to cut his meat at dinner time. He was once full of life. Now he just exists, but never complains.
He lost his self worth, confidence, and he’s scared. Although, he won’t say it.
He is worried about his future. Will he have anyone to take care of him after his mom passes away?.Needs 24 hour care. He has 2 aides, one for day and one for night.Mom comes to visit, but, she’s over 80 years old. It’s getting harder and harder for the elderly lady to make the trip.
Because of his brain damage, his personality has its ups and downs. Sometimes hes in a gray mood. Sometimes he will yell, five minutes later he’ll forget what he was yelling about.
But, I do hear him laugh at certain times, when a silly commercial goes on!
But all in all ,his persona is gray and dark. Of course I can see why.
The man sued the hospital for incompetence. He did win the case and received $20 million.
He tells me now I’m a rich man, but what good is it? But ,at least that would be enough money to carry him till his death. He will be able to afford live in aides. Money means nothing when you’re not healthy. We must be thankful for what we have, and for all the others who have nothing.
Let’s hope for the best for this man.Maybe one day,he’ll have a normal life. God watches over him. 🙏
