Playing With Fire
They warned me, of course, that your temper was hot,
That the sparks in your eyes were a dangerous spot.
But I like the risk, I enjoy the grand blaze,
And I thought I could manage your reckless, wild ways.
I stood in the kitchen, just watching you burn,
The candles, the bridges, the lessons you'd never learn.
I fed the combustion, believed I was strong,
A firefighter convinced that I truly belonged
In the middle of chaos, the heat and the smoke,
Ignoring the moment our whole structure broke.
I thought we were the fire, a brilliant, bright thing,
The glorious, hot music that only we could sing.
But soon I realized you were just playing alone,
Using my patience as fuel for your throne.
And when I walked out, I didn't reach for the hose,
I just let the whole messy inferno expose
The fact that I wasn't the victim, you see.
I was the one who ignited the whole thing to free
Myself from the burden of keeping your flame low.
Now I'm standing outside, watching your whole life glow.
It's a beautiful sight, that destructive, bright light.
I'm warm by your wreckage, and spending the night
Enjoying the heat, now that I've learned the best rule:
Don't put out the fire; just stand back and be cool.
