POEM STARTER
Awakening
Write a poem about an awakening - it could be literal or metaphorical.
Lonely
The lamp flickers on and off softly
As though it’s a fire begging to grow
As though you are not there, begging for it to stop
You sit on the bed sheets you cleaned that morning
The same bed sheets you bought with all your money
They’re a fancy material, that of expensive things
Your alone though
No one to share it with, to breathe in the detergent you used and think of
home
No one to hold you as you flick the light off
No one to say everything will be okay
Your utterly alone, many people face
But it’s still
hurts
It still tugs and pulls you down
Deep into the waves of loneliness
Forgetting that you left the door unlocked
The waves wash in
They flood your house, sure, but a man emerges
He’s in a button up and tie with slicked back hair
He saw your distress
He heard your cries
He holds you on those new sheets, as you turn the light off
Your tears damp on his shirt sleeve
His shoes and tie discarded on the floor
Everything will be okay, yeah?
You are not alone
You are with people who will bare their neck to you, and let you bite
You are in the deep dark ocean, by his side
You are letting those flames swallow you,
Turn off the light
