POEM STARTER

Write a poem that describes the longing of a reader who falls hopelessly in love with a fictional character.
Incubus
There’s something about your darkness that brings comforting solitude.
When it’s just you and I,
Everyone disappears.
Though I only know you in black and white,
I see every color with you on my mind.
I feel like I can love myself with the lights on.
Naked and unashamed as Adam and Eve before they fell from grace.
I can be soft
And open.
Welcoming you into my bed after the world goes quiet,
Hearing your voice the way I always imagined it.
Deep and soulful—
Whispering in my ears that we can write our own happy ending,
Your pillow talk will be the pen
And my cries are the ink.
What a beautiful catalyst to the climax
As you creep out of my room
And slip back between the pages.
The morning after,
I have the sense that I’ve known you
For longer than you’ve been in print.
You’ve painted such a picture—
Rising from nothing but a concept
And giving me everything.
If only the reality was as tangible.
