The Woman on the Subway

Felicity had to get a job at a very young age. She had 6 siblings at home and her mom worked all the time. Yet, they still barely scraped by. It started after her father passed. Now they barely see her. So Felicity dropped out of school and got a job in the mornings so she was home at night.

One day as she was riding the subway back home after a long day. She decided to put her AirPods in and fidget with the case. As she was listening to her third Guns N’ Roses song in a row, she noticed someone sit across from her. She didn’t really care. She saw the heels the woman was wearing and assumed she was safe.

Suddenly she glanced back up and noticed the persons hands. A woman’s hands. They were wrinkled, but not too wrinkled. As if they were old but unused. The woman’s fingernails each polished perfectly. Not a chip in sight.

Felicity then looked at her own hands and noticed her own nail polish. Every single finger being chipped. She couldn’t afford the good polish. She then noticed the cut she had made earlier that day. She looked closer at her hands to realize there were many scars from cuts, scrapes and burns. She looked back at the woman’s hands to see if she had any scarring. Of course she didn’t.

The train finally stopped. It was Felicity’s turn to get off as she did she glanced at the woman’s hand one last time. This time noticing there was a indent on her left ring finger. It was like a ring had been there for years but removed recently.

As Felicity walked out of the subway she couldn’t help but wonder about the woman. And what exactly her hands meant. Why isn’t the ring there? Did she ever work? Did her finger get smaller? Are they divorced? Is that why her hands were so soft looking? Has her husband passed? As she walked into her house she was rushed by 6 young children, who all just wanted a hug. She individually hugged each of her siblings and asked them about their day.

It was in this moment that Felicity realized she would do anything in this world, just to see her siblings hands look like the woman on the train.
