Untruth

Darcella’s pale skin begins to crack as she collapses to her knees. Every flaw, every error being uncovered and splayed out before him.

Her joints ache in pain. She digs her palms into her eyes, begging for the pain to rid itself but it never did. Her heart weigh heavy in her chest, as if it held the whole world inside. She couldn’t bear to look at him. Her breathing began to grow rapid—her anxiety catching up with every sultry tear shed.

“Forgive—“ Adelio tries to speak. His voice ragged on the edges, laced with pain and heartache. The agony lingering in the air.

“Go away!” Darcella shouts at him without so much as a glance. Tears gathered at her chin, crimson red. It stained the tulle of her billowing skirt, she never quite liked it anyway. It was rather arduous to dance in.

But, he liked it. And for that, she tears at the fabric, begging for every lingering trace of memory to begone. She didn’t want him to leave, no. She hadn’t meant it.

She hated him, she did. For his lies, for his inconsistent storytelling, for the pain he had caused her. But, some parts of her hoped that he’d beg for her forgiveness, for her mercy if it meant the expense of his dignity.

Every sliver of hope was crushed when she heard retreating footsteps on the creaky wooden floorboards until his presence was no longer felt.

Darcella’s body shook with sobs that made her nauseous. The bile raising in her throat, stinging.

Her heart was cracking into pieces that it felt she couldn’t hold it together any longer. So, she didn’t. She welcomed the pain, the agony, the torture that he burdened her with. It felt like an eternity that her breaths were never going to fulfill her, that her heart pounded against her chest as if trying to escape the pain.

The sudden heartache, was gone.

All that was left in its wake was pure, unfulfilled wrath.
