POEM STARTER
Write a free verse poem from the voice of someone who feels resentful.
Free verse poetry does not have a structured rhyme scheme, can have lines of irregular length, and does not have to keep to a regular meter.
The Privileged One
you have gotten everything handed to you,
Yet you tell me you’re struggling from your four bedroom house.
You tell me you’re broke,
Even after you told me you never let your bank account get under $1000.
You show me all of these things that you get to do with your kids.
Here i am, working my ass off to where i barely see my kids.
Your first car was given to you at 17,
I had to buy my first car at 21.
Don’t you dare tell me “i have a hard life”
You wouldn’t know a hard life if you lost half of everything you have.
I don’t care that you get to go to Disney world twice a month,
I don’t care that you just bot another $400.00 pot for your plants,
I don’t care that you want a bigger house.
I want a house.
I want to take my kids to Disney at least once.
I want $400 in my bank account.
I called you excited that i was getting a promotion
You said “do you really think $20,000.00 a year will change your life?
No.
I don’t think it will change my life.
But i know damn well, it will take some of this weight off of my shoulders.
I want your life.
I want you to live my life.
Maybe,
Just maybe
You’ll understand what it means to struggle.
