I’ve watched you every step of the way.

When you tripped up the science block stairs, sure I laughed a little once my heart stopped thundering, but I helped you up, my hand stayed a second too long on yours.

When you needed help with your English, I answered your questions, helped with your grammar.

When you were cold I gave you my jumper, when your school bag was too heavy I shrugged and carried it for you.

On the days you didn’t eat lunch, I took an extra apple from the canteen, tucked it in my bag so that if you got hungry later I could be there.

When you were freaking out about your clothes for prom, I helped you pick and told you you looked great. I didn’t ask you to go with me.

When we played sports, I watched you, protected.

And now…

You’ve left. Gone to a different college.

Taken all the help I’ve given you, and left me with none.

Where is my happiness?
