Parting

We got off the train after a two-hour ride and walked towards the ocean. It was quiet. No one spoke, so we didn’t either. Instead, we thought about how much our lives had changed since we met. The highs and lows we experienced with each other. The birthdays we arrived at. The funerals we attended.

When we got to the shoreline, we stopped and just stared out at the water. We didn’t speak yet; it still didn’t feel right to break the silence.

Then, you walked forward. You turned around to look at me, but I couldn’t see you. You stood silhouetted against the glowing sky, your face lost in the shadow of the setting sun.

Then, you raised both your arms up and out.

I stood there for a while until tears began to blur my vision. I began to walk towards you. I stood in front of you for a moment. Then, I walked into your arms. You pulled my head onto your shoulder and patted my head softly.

Then, I broke down.

We stayed there for a while. But then you spoke.

“It’s time.”

She let go of me and began to float off the ground. My eyes widened. I knew this would eventually happen; you even told me to prepare myself. Though it seems I didn’t prepare enough.

I couldn’t even speak. No matter what I had to say, this was happening. So I just stood and watched as she flew towards the sunset—encircled in an iridescent glow, sparkles slowly dimming behind her. Each passing second, she was getting smaller and smaller—until she was no longer in sight.

The sun fully set after a while, but I was still standing there. The sky was holding still, waiting for night to truly arrive.

Then the reality of it all came crashing down, and I dropped to my knees.

From this moment on, I won’t be able to see you.

You won’t be there when I awake.

You won’t be there on my birthday to cut the cake.

You won’t go with me to visit our favorite restaurant.

You won’t be there to fight for the remote.

You won’t be there.

It’ll be impossible for me to get over this.

It’s impossible.

It’s—
