POEM STARTER
Paper boats, the scent of lemons, and tears.
Use these descriptors as inspiration for a poem.
a summer of change
(this isn’t a real person or scenario i experienced, just wanted to keep the “dear” letter poems going)
dear ******,
we sent our paper boats to sea that day,
clueless of the fact our lives would change—
at least, i was.
as you made your delicious recipe of strawberry lemonade,
how i loved the scent of the citrusy lemons,
you said you had to tell me something.
i asked what it was,
and with tears in your eyes,
you said you were going to be far away.
i asked what you meant.
you said you were moving.
and then i saw the resemblance of the paper boats—
sailing to a new shore,
by yourself, ironically,
when i wished you would stay.
without words, only a hug, i said goodbye to you.
you and my heart left that day.
your friendsick heart of mine,
chiyo.
