The Day Harriet Returned

Jen’s older sister Harriet was finally coming home from Sweden for her college semester. Jen missed her dearly and was ecstatic to hear that she was on her way home. When Jen’s family picked Harriet up from the airport, she was… different. Harriet used to be so bubbly and open. Now she seemed sad and quiet. Invisible.

Jen asked her questions about Sweden but she didn’t seem to keen to answer. When they got home, Harriet went straight upstairs to unpack her room and all her stuff was mysteriously gray. All monochrome. Jen could only imagine that something terrible had happened in Sweden to Harriet. At dinner, Harriet just sat quietly and ate her food. She used to be full of stories from the day, but now she was… silent.

After dinner, Jen’s parents talked to Harriet in the living room, and according to her parents, it was nothing she’d need to know about. Jen spent the night worrying about her sister, trying to figure out what was wrong. The next morning, she woke up really early and heard Harriet crying in her room, ripping up a sort of papers. When Harriet left her room to eat breakfast, Jen struck.

She snuck into Harriet’s room and stole the ripped papers. She went back into her room and tried to piece them together. Eventually, she figured it out. It was a letter from her boyfriend. This is what it said, ”Dear Harriet, I didn’t want to be the one to have to tell you this, but your family is in the hospital. Just kidding! I thought I’d end our relationship with a joke. Bye! (If you couldn’t figure it out, I’m breaking up with you). From, Travis”.

When Jen finished reading the letter her face turned red. She felt good for Harriet because Travis was a sack of weasels and a dirtbag. Then she felt bad. Travis had been her loving boyfriend for years and all of sudden he just breaks up with her?! She understood that Harriet was upset, but what she didn’t understand was the drastic personality change. She decided it was best to lay low for a while and see if Harriet got better at all.

Right at that moment, Harriet walked in Jen’s room and saw the papers on her bed. “What are you doing with those?!” she screamed. Jen was at a loss for words. “Did Travis really break up with you?” muttered Jen. “That’s not for you to know!” screamed Harriet even louder.

Then, Harriet noticed tears gathering in the corners of Jen’s eyes. She paced herself, then said “Yes, he did, and he was a cheating little dirtbag, but that still doesn’t mean you can snoop,”. Jen nodded and Harriet smiled at her and gave her a big hug.
