POEM STARTER
Submitted by Margaret Sok
Did I cross the line...?
Write a poem or short story about a character going too far.
Secret is Out
Two friends.
Coworkers?
No definitely friends.
Work friends.
I don't owe you anything.
Not my trust, nor loyalty.
Nothing.
If you don't belong to him anymore,
what's holding me back?
I like him, he likes me.
But I didn't want to tell you,
I'm scared how you'll react.
Secret is out.
And he's the rat.
You know now and it's too late.
Do you think of me as being a snake?
I don't owe you anything.
You see us together.
My stomach knots in four different places.
Can't imagine being the girl
Who has to face this.
You.
I'm sorry.
I don't owe you anything.
Now it's a mess.
Beyond repair.
No matter what I try to do,
the trust was never there.
From Instagram, "Close friends"
To, "Follow" and avoiding making amends.
I came at you hostile,
when your intention was the opposite.
Peace, you wanted.
Proof, I needed.
Proof I could have another.
Proof I was seen as desirable
By someone other than my mother.
I'm sorry.
I'm sorry.
I'm sorry.
A coward I am,
To see you after
And know better
And avoid coming to you with
The truth of the matter.
He was an asshole, and you got away.
I was the one after,
and our friendship was
the price I had to pay.
