STORY STARTER
Submitted by Lana Rose
Time keeps randomly stopping around you, and you think it is you who is doing it. Then one night you are at a party, and time stops. Everyone is frozen, except one person at the other end of the room...
More Questions.
Her eyes are a deep blue with a dark yellow ring around the pupil and flecks of gold swirling out from the center. Her golden eyelashes are thick and long, all-natural beauty untouched by man-made products. Definitely the most interesting eyes I've seen this evening. Her extatic smile shapes them into half-moons, giving them an extra twinkle.
I duck under her outstretched arm and turn to look at her boyfriend. His eyes seem to be locked on hers, a tender and somewhat bashful gaze giving me the impression that he takes good care of her. That's rare these days, especially in this part of town. His eyes are a simple brown, much like mine, but I'm awarding him a higher score for expression.
I move around his frozen body and glance across the room, making sure I haven't missed anyone. Travis, who invited me to the party, is on the couch with a friend of his, both of them stuck in the middle of roaring laughter. His laugh is so distinct, I can hear it echoing in my head even as the erie silence blankets the room. A jock who's name I can't remember is chugging his seventh beer to impress the girl standing next to him, foamy droplets clinging to his dark mustache. The aforemantioned girl seems disinterested, opting instead to stare at her phone. One by one I check them off my list, the blonde winning by a large margin.
When you're face to face with someone, you really get a chance to look deep into their eyes, but after a party like this I would have walked away with only a vague impression of what each person looked like from afar.
This is my newest game to entertain myself when time freezes. Or do I just simply leave time? I've never talked to anyone about this. As much as I want answers, I'd like to stay out of an insaine asylum more.
I can sense time beginning to stir. I've often wondered what triggers these moments. Is it something I do or say? I can't seem to find a pattern no matter how hard I rack my brain afterwords.
I make my way back to the couch where Travis sits and try to resume the position I was in right before time froze. I never want to shock anyone by suddenly appearing in front of them when time kicks back on.
As I'm trying to remember what it was we were all laughing about, I hear a noise outside. Immediately my adrenaline spikes. In the ten months this has been happening to me, I've never encountered anything else that was able to step outside of time like I was.
The door opens and a short girl steps in. She looks to be about twenty years old with long dark hair and a small box tucked under her arm. Her long, charcoal dress swirls around her as she kicks off her sandals and begins to make her way across the room.
I can't help but stare, my heart pounding.
Just before she exits the room, she stops with a puzzled look on her face. She turns around and begins to scan the room. She must've heard my panicked breathing.
We lock eyes and her jaw drops. There's a moment where it seems that we too have been frozen in time.
Then, as if someone took a hammer and shattered the fragile barrier between worlds, time roars back into full force and we are no longer alone.
