POEM STARTER
Write an elegy about the death of something other than a person.
An elegy is a sad poem, traditionally expressing sorrow for someone who has passed away.
Empathy
I suppose I should have expected
Being here today,
Standing beside your casket.
I wish I didn’t expect it,
I wish that this was a surprise.
But it isn’t.
You have left us,
And you’re already being forgotten.
I, and few others, will reach out for you
Wishing to keep you here,
To compress our hands to your already still heart.
As if the effort of few will bring you back.
To bring you back we would need the effort of many
The effort of towns,
Cities,
Countries,
Continents.
But they are unwilling.
I don’t know why.
They turn their backs to you as if you are something to be scoffed at.
You are something that shouldn’t be ignored,
You and your beauty,
You who tried to know everyone you passed.
You are someone to be mourned, not forgotten.
