WRITING OBSTACLE

Write a gossip session between two friends which suddenly turns very serious.

How can you use dialogue and speech tags to convey the change of tone?

I Can’t Believe You!

“That’s hilarious!” Sarah chuckles, finally grasping the joke.

Didn’t think it was that hard to get.

Then again, Sarah is a air head. Her blonde hair really doesn’t help either, she’s your exact sterotype of a bubbly blonde Barbie.

Ella sighs, twirling her braided chestnut hair and adjusts her glasses.

If they weren’t friends in childhood she couldn’t see how they’d even speak to each other now.

Sarah widens her grin, and her eyes light up.

“Okay so.. did you know there’s this app with ALL the gossip in the school??” The blonde slings the chair across from Ella and places it next to her, pulling her bright pink IPhone 16 out of her pocket.

The nerd groans. Another one of Sarah’s hyperfixations. This time gossip? Ella wants none of it, but she’s her best friend, it’s her duty to indulge her sillyness.

“Ta da!” Sarah presses the app. Really the name is “Gossip finder”? Couldn’t think of anything more original?

Ella’s eyes widen, staring at all the posts from anonymous people. Posting secret admirer letters, sharing embarrassing things about others, this and that.

“Oh Ryan… who knew one of the girls were into him?” Sarah giggles, and Ella herself can’t help but let out a laugh as well.

“THAT Ryan, the one who puked all over Ms. Santino last year?” Ella laughs louder, causing Sarah to wrap her arm around her, pulling the phone closer.

“Yep! Looks like it, it says Ryan Boyer. That’s definitely him.” The blonde points at the screen, then continues to scroll.

“Huh, what’s this?” Sarah’s eyes squint, focusing on a singular picture. Ella does the same.

_Who took that picture?! _

__

The nerd shifts anxiously in her seat, using her right hand to swipe up on the blondes phone.

‘I’m sure its some boring picture, but hey look at this!”

“No no, I think I saw something” Sarah begins to scrolls back.

“Are you sure? There’s a lot more posts we can look at.” Ella places her finger back on the smart phone, stopping her scrolling.

“Stop!” The blonde snatches her phone away, pulling her arm back and shooting up from the wooden chair.

Ella had never seen her this way before.

She was incredibly fucked.

Sarah scrolls vigorously back, her eyes dimming as she goes. It was terrifying to see such a bubbly girl this way.

And then.. stopped. Stared.

Ella watched the blondes face change emotions at the speed of light, finally settling on fury.

“El, what the hell is this?” She shoves the phone in front of the nerds face.

“I don’t know what you are talking about.” Her eyes dart away, telling their own story. The blood rushes to her face in embarrassment.

It was a picture of her, Ella Smyth, kissing Sarah’s crush Damien.

It was an accident. Right?

“I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean for it to happen. We were at a party and-“

“And WHAT Ella? I thought we were best friends. I thought we were _family._”

She’s right, Ella and Sarah have been together forever. Longer than any other friendship, a whopping 9 years. So why did she do that? _How _could she do that?

“We are Sarah! It just happened. We were talking and laughing, maybe we had too much to drink at the party.”

“I might be an idiot, but I can recognize when my _best friend _does something shitty. Especially to me.” Tears begin to flow down her eyes, screeching her last words.

“I..” Ella’s head droops. How could she face her now?

“I’m sorry.”

“Are you?!” The classroom could be under a flood warning with how much the blonde is crying. Good thing no one is here.

“I am. You have to believe me, we are besties aren’t we?” Ella turns her head back up and stares at Sarah, eyes pleading more than ever.

“I’ll have to reconsider. I’m going home.” Just like that, Sarah was gone.

_Good bye, Ella. _
