Tratorious

I felt the drying blood making the skin around my mask taunt,

“Her blood.” I whisper to myself, feeling the distinct prick of tears welling behind my eyes. My nemesis, Dread, knew what attacking in daylight meant; and he used it to his advantage. I had gotten too lax with keeping my lives seperate, he must’ve had someone tailing me to figure out a weakness.

“Lifegiver?” A timid voice draws me out of my dark thoughts.

“Yes that’s me.” I saw swinging my body around to find the voice, almost knocking over the person in the process.

“She’s asking for the person who saved her. We explained we weren’t sure if you were still here; but I told her I’d let you know she was asking if you were by chance here.” The small woman says matter of facts before turning on her heel without a glance back and walking off. I follow her down the expansive halls, feeling caught off by the smell of antiseptic and the glare of the luminescent bulbs. She led me to a small room, I tuck the number 411 into the back of my mind to come back later.

“In here. The nurses station is just down the hall if you two need anything.” The woman stated before leaving me just outside the door. I take a deep breath and step in.

The moment my eyes land in her I completely forget I’m still in costume and let out the shakiest exhale of my life. She’s a little pale, and wires attached to the numerous machines she was attached to; but she was awake.

“Thank you for saving me, but I have to ask. Did you also save my friend that was there with me?” She forces herself more upright in bed and physically braces for my answer. I’ve never told her my secret; all to keep her safe. Now she’s laying in a hospital bed still more worried about me than her. In that moment I make the best and worst desicion in the life of a super. I pull down my mask.

“I’m okay mi amour.” I whisper as I close the distance between us pulling her into an embrace
