Sealed Fate

The setting takes place during the time of Nazi Germany.

“Aleksandra.” I ask.

“Yes?” Aleksandra replies.

“There is a young man waiting for you outside. He kept calling out your name. Who is he?” I question.

Aleksandra looks through the window and says, “Nothing, nobody. I don’t know.” She responds quickly and nervously.

I look outside the window and exam him closely.

I see the young man take a pocket watch out with the swastika symbol on it.

“Aleksandra, there is a Nazi outside, get down and hide!! Get your things quickly we need to leave now.” I said panicking.

“Wait, stop!” Aleksandra said.

“He’s a- a friend, or maybe a bit more.” She responds.

“Aleksandra, you know the Nazis despise people who aren’t them. Look what has happened to the Jews.” I say concerned.

“Yeah, I know. But we’re Polish, doesn’t that account for something?” Aleksandra responds looking down.

“No it doesn’t. Aleksandra don’t you understand? They hate all Slavics, Jews and discriminate towards people who aren’t them.” I say.

“They torture their victims before killing them. Those people, th-they” I said, my eyes beginning to water.

“They beg for death. They’d rather have the sweet relief of death, rather than living. Aleksandra, I don’t want that to be you.” I say.

“But he’s sweet, he’s not like the others. And his name is, Nicolaus.” Aleksandra responds quickly.

“He is willing to die for me! Don’t you understand? He would flee the country for me. He’d do anything!” Said, Aleksandra.

“If he gets caught, you get caught and vice versa.” I respond.

“Does he know you’re a pole?” I ask?

“Yes he does and he doesn’t care!” Aleksandra says weakly, her voice beginning to crack and tears on her face.

“You know what?” I ask.

“What?” Says, Aleksandra.

“Go with him.” I say, a bit angrily.

“I will.” Aleksandra responds.

Aleksandra slowly grabs her bag, her coat and heads to the door.

Aleksandra pauses in front of the door, and her hand is on the handle. She began to bite her lip and turns around and her back faces the door.

As I saw her face looking reluctant, I say one more thing, “He will give you death, and you will love him for it. And that’s the only time you’ll ever truly love him, because your suffering will be over.”

And with that, she quickly turned around angrily and walked into a fate that was sealed.

Those were the last words I spoke to her, and I never saw her again.
