VISUAL PROMPT
Prompt submitted by Tenshi

Write a poem about what streetlights make you think of.
Streetlights
***THIS ISN’T A POEM, UNLIKE WHAT THE PROMPT ASKS FOR. I got too carried away :)***
Those streetlights.
The dazzling, speckled streetlights that envelop Grand Street, glowing with their radiant joy.
They remind me of… happiness, like a beaming kid on Christmas morning. Freedom, like the birds flying in the wind for the first time. And, the beautiful stars up above. And past those stars, the diverse, vast planets, and unknowns. They also remind me of how I used to feel — when I was that kid on Christmas morning, or when I was that bird flying free. Or, when I traversed the endless stars up above.
Unfortunately, they could never compare to the streetlights at my home.
“You coming?”
I turn my head back. The light, pleasant voice that called me reveals itself to be from An. Her full brown locks of hair fall infront of her eyes and she flicks them against the wind, back behind her ears, with much irritation. Her dark, deep blue sea eyes glower.
“Come on, we need to get back. It’s way too windy here,” my friend pouts.
“Sorry, sorry,” I reply. “I got distracted. I’ll stick with you this time, I promise.” I take a few steps forward to signal that I’ll be coming along, but I have to look back at those lights just one more time.
Those streetlights.
They’re not normal.
It’s not like they hold secrets, or tell of tales — rather, they make me feel something that I’ve never felt since I was young.
Freedom? No. Close, but it’s not the right word to describe it.
Joy? Of course I always feel joy looking at the lights, but it’s not this new feeling…
It’s a feeling of change; a feeling that my future the universe holds is up to me to determine. A feeling that gives me inspiration; motivation, to get up and try again. To try and flap those wings again, and fly away.
Maybe those streetlights make me feel…
Promise.
