Shattered Soul

Loneliness invaded every corner of her mind as she sat on the beach staring out at the endless expanse of water. Each breath brought in the oxygen of life while each exhale spoke of every disappointment, every broken promise, and shattered dreams. Silence surrounding her spoke louder than a thousand booming voices. The heavy darkness weighed her down, chasing her as if it were a starving shark seeking the essence of her that coursed down her cheeks with each burning hot tear.

Today had been meant to be a celebration but it was anything but that for her. How could it be a happy celebration of life when no one remembered? She wasn’t the type that spoke loudly of her hearts desires, but wasn’t it a simple human trait to remember someone you said was Important?

Her tragedy was his triumph because as he stepped out of the gates that has effectively frozen him in time, it seemed as if he also pushed her in, taking his place. Frozen in time. Emotions stand still. Waiting with cursed hope that he would remember her, remind himself that he truly hadn’t been alone no matter how hard things had been for them.

She was trapped by the days gone by, the what ifs and the maybes. Imprisoned by the lies he told, but wishing to hear the lies even for just one more day if it meant he remembered what they had been to each other, dreams they had dreamed would come true in this very day. A day that was her tragedy but his triumph.

Wrapping her arms around herself, hoping that somehow she could hold herself together, but feeling it all falling apart at the realization that she was so unimportant, there only to meet a temporary need, and even though he swore he would always be there, he had truly just forgotten her.
