It glowed with our love, the ring. Karl had put it on a chain. He had given it to me after I’d eaten my pizza so my fingers were a little greasy. I was so nervous.

I was so in love that on my way to my locker to get my chemistry book for class, I hardly noticed Jason step up to the locker next to mine.

“Jason,” I said. “What are you doing here?”

“My folks were having money problems so I had to go back to this school,” he said.

I looked up at him for a moment. Those crystal gray eyes that seemed to look into my very soul. And suddenly I didn’t feel it anymore. That feeling that I’d do anything for Jason. It was gone. I was free.

I fingered the ring around my neck and smiled. “Good to see you again,” I said, and walked to class.
