POEM STARTER
Use the idea of something becoming polluted as a metaphor in your poem.
Pungent
Desolated, wrecked and set ablaze
Everyone’s soul seems molded and decayed
Wiping away just enough from their eyes to get through the day
Do they care how you feel? I’m truly sorry to say
The lack of empathy in the world made it this way
A child walking the streets alone
Because their landlord kicked them out in the cold
For being late on rent for their home
Mothers doing unspeakable things to keep warmth in their bones
Now he sits on the curb, crying, with no hand to hold
The landlord sits back, on his stack of cash as other cast the first stone
If it were you, could you still dodge the rocks being thrown?
We play pretend we care about those who protect our rights
We steal from under them as soon as they enter boot camp and say goodbye
While their families live in fear and cry every night
Hoping that all of this is worth the honor and sacrifice
Oh, How the world sold them this lie
Now, he has a flag on a casket and it came as a surprise
When the government told her his benefits were going to be denied
Do we get it now?
Do we finally see?
The world only gets brighter with compassion and empathy
When it is finally time to meet the end
And you stare blankly out the door on your death bed
Waiting for someone to come in to hear another voice besides the one in your head
But no one’s coming. How you lived is how you go, and you are now condemned.
