The Ascent

My neck was craned, as I stared up into the clouds only the tower of the greats dared to touch. My eyes scanned this gargantuan tower until I could no longer see it, the beautiful monument towering into the heavens themselves. The tower of the greats was a marvellous palace, constructed in the time when only the gods walked the earth, by only the most masterful of godly craftsmanship. With stretching pillars and fabulous carvings that intertwined and climbed up the side, it truly was a sight to be marvelled at. The striking bright white marble that it was made from, represented the beauty of a thousand sparkling pearls. It loomed over my comparatively tiny frame, casting a huge shadow that spread out over the terrain around me.

I had completed my treacherous trek through the fierce forest after recently visiting the wisdom woods in search of the wishing tree. I was on a new quest: to find the ruby of the tower, a magical artefact that possessed the sheer power of the gods themselves. I stood there valiantly staring up at this humongous tower of both incredible beauty and also terror. Even the bushy green forest behind me wanted to catch a glimpse of this fabulous sight, each tree trying to stretch up the highest to try and see as much of the tower as possible. Although I did look very heroic, I should stop waiting around for someone to paint me or something. I decided that it was time to stop gawping and that it was time to get moving.

I hopped off the rock I was standing on and felt my leather boots thud down onto the grassy ground below. I headed up the steep rocky trail, observing my surroundings. Trees grew alongside the cliffs that the tower was perched on as if they were having a race on who could reach the top of the cliff first. After a while, I had finally reached the top of the trail.

I stared up at the cliffs face. It was like a plane of endless rock, and there was the tower, teetering over the edge of the sheer drop. I readied myself for the tough climb ahead. I slipped on my leather gloves and changed into some more suitable shoes. I took off my cloak and put them, along with my leather boots, in my backpack, that contained all of my essentials for the journey ahead. With adrenaline pumping through my veins, I heaved myself onto the side of the cliff. It was time for the ascent.

Sweat poured from my forehead as I began to climb. I used all of my strength, grabbing one jutting piece of rock and highering myself up to the next. I forced myself not to look down at the horrifying drop I would be faced with if I dared to loosen my grip. It was an utterly gruelling task, and my arms ached with each new move that I made. The torturous trip took hours, however, it felt like it stretched on for days.

After countless hours of climbing, I heaved myself up onto the platform with the last of my strength. I breathed a huge sigh of relief, feeling my limbs loosen and my body relax. I stretched, my wide arms spreading beside me. Glancing down, I spotted my owl companion, Darius, who I had said should meet me at the top of the cliff. He perched on my shoulder. I turned.

The huge oak doors of the tower creaked open, before I could even attempt to push them open. They revealed a huge, echoing hall, with nothing but a winding staircase in the centre of it. I gingerly walked inside, making sure that no one was there to jump out at me, and tiptoed through the hall. I began the second climb, the staircase, each step more tiring that the next. They seemed to wind on for almost forever, which presented two challenges: the steep trek itself and the danger of falling asleep on the way up. My legs ached and stung as I neared closer to the top. After what felt like an eternity of a dull but tiring sequence of thousands of steps, I had finally reached the top of the staircase. My legs shook uncontrollably from exhaustion when I arrived at the top.

Another huge door guarded the exit. This time, it was patterned with golden swirls and swoops that painted a picture of pure joy and whimsy. They swung smoothly open and allowed me to emerge out of the very tip of the tower, onto a huge piece of cliff that loomed over the land below. Mist coated the ledge, like a snaking trail of pure mystery all around me. I could see everything from here. The rocky cliffs below jutted out in a jagged manner, as if they were the razor sharp teeth of the cliff itself. Next to the cliffs, was the fierce forest; an endless carpet of dark green trees that enveloped the earth before me, like an infinite blanket of woodland. Achres upon achres of pure untouched nature worked in perfect harmony with the sharp cliffs below.

In the centre of the ledge I was standing on was a large statue, with carvings that adorned its sides like bundles of thorns snaking its way up its rectangular shape. In the centre of it, a ruby red crystal was embedded. My fingers covered its surface, and I plucked it straight from the rock. I examined the lovely crystal, the beams from the shining sun giving me an advantage. Inside of the crystal, red lightning crackled, mystical magic twisting through the infinite void of blood red galaxies. Godly power surged through my veins, making me feel like I could achieve anything with my newfound might. I felt the strength of the omnipotent beings flood my body. I put the stone back into my backpack and put on my robe. I took one last glimpse of the view, turned, and set off into the horizon.
