Echolocation

There is no darkness like the pitch black of open ocean.

When there is no horizon.

When even the death-gray of lightlessness is absent.

But there is more than one way to see.

The whales are still singing to one another.

Across swathes of water beyond comprehension.

What do we look like to them,

I wonder.

Are we but breaks in their song?

Or grace notes?
