POEM STARTER

‘All in a golden afternoon, under the skies of cloudless blue.’

Write a poem that begins or ends with this line, adapted from Alice in Wonderland. Don’t feel limited to the themes and images of the book – see where else you could go from these words.

Hallow

In the deep fields, where grass grows like spires,

The trees reach so high that you fall back

Trying to take a peek at their tops.

The calm, the quiet, the giggles which follow

The flight of the birds, and their songs so hallow.

If I could be anywhere, it’s where there’s that magic in the air.

But that is no more than a memory, fond

A connection to my past, a childhood bond.

Untainted by wicked desires, unbound from senseless ires.

When my twig legs toppled, only to arise again,

Filled with glee, waiting for another adventure to begin.

A time when broken applied only to things, never to people,

When I had little sense of what was good and evil.

Now I think back to the days of my youth

Where all I’d lose is myself-

All in a golden afternoon, under the skies

Of cloudless blue.
