Catfish

X marks the spot. I’m supposed to meet Thomas here. I look around, the air is hot with a smell of salt from the ocean. I feel lost but I know I am not, there is no way I am. X marks this spot, says my GPS. I look behind me and next to me, but there’s not much to look at besides the waves and the trees still as statues.

I sit on the grass at the top of the hill, still seeing nobody in sight. Thomas Walker, where are you? Online, Thomas has dark skin and cool dark eyes. I pull out my phone and go back to the dating app I’ve been using for the last 3 months. I tap on his name and his face appears in front of me. I can’t help but stare and dream. I am so excited to meet someone who has been nothing but kind to me, he seems like such a gentlemen. But he’s late. Where could he be?

I heard a car door slam behind me, I quickly stand up and turned around, eager to look as if I haven’t been waiting around too long. A woman is walking towards me. I turned back around, she isn’t here for me, surely not. Why would she be? She must be out for a walk, I look like a loser at the top of this hill.

“Hello.” She was right behind me. It sent chills down my spine. I just blinked, staring at her. “My name is Cara, are you here to meet Thomas?”

“Yes, is he ok?”

“Yes, but no. Thomas isn’t coming.” My face turned in a huge question mark. “I’m his sister.”

“Why are you here and not him? I’ll need some clarification.”

“Well, see,”

“Have I been talking to you and not Thomas? Have I been catfished?” My tone rising up in frustration.

“I can explain. See, my brother and I switched phones and his dating app never got deleted. I decided to be him, for fun. Then, I made this incredible connection, with you.” I blinked in disgust. My face turning into a sickening feeling. “I’m so sorry. But, we should get to know each other.”

“Starting off in a relationship with a lie is the last thing I want to do. You’re a liar, and I don’t think I’ll be able to think anything differently of you. Good bye, Cara.” I walked away from her leaving her standing on the hill where I was once waiting for the man of my dreams. He never came and the worst scenario came to light. The rest of my vacation here in Hawaii will be all for me.

Unless, Thomas Walker makes his appearance
