POEM STARTER

Awakening

Write a poem about an awakening - it could be literal or metaphorical.

Between Here And Gone

It was an ordinary Saturday morning when I decided it was time. I’m not sure what sparked the idea in my mind but I knew that if I sat at home drinking iced lattes and watching rom-coms with my mom that I would never accomplish my dream of being a photographer. I’d lived my whole life in the small town of Plainview, Nebraska. About a year ago, right after I graduated high school, I expressed my dreams to move away to my mom. She  had been my best friend my whole life, so I expected support. Instead all she said was “It’s easy to leave, but you can’t take home with you when you’re gone.” And that was the end of it. I made plans to start online college after I took a gap year. Then when applications for online college were coming up I started to question why I had even made that decision in the first place. Something I’ve always lived by is to make decisions that don’t leave me with any regret, so I knew that if I didn’t leave I might regret it for the rest of my life. So that whole Saturday I biked to my favorite coffee shop and researched inspirational places to live. All I could find were busy tourist cities and I almost gave up and went home. But then I saw photo someone posted on Facebook. It was a beautiful architectural city with people crowding the moonlit streets singing, dancing and laughing. I clicked on the account and it appeared as “Anonymous User.” All that was provided was a caption that said Silverpoint, Oregon. I searched it up on google and a website popped up called Trainline. When I clicked on the website it showed a singular train listing, stating Sunday- July 17, 2025: 8 am. To Silverpoint, Oregon. “There’s no way. That’s tomorrow.” I thought to myself. On the bike ride home, I weighed my options: start online college and possibly stay in Plainview forever or chase a city full of opportunity where I could pursue my dream. I’m not usually impulsive but instinctively, I went straight to my room and started packing.
