Blades of the moon
Wide spread panel. A burning battlefield under a silver moon. Ash drifts like snow. Corpses of soldiers litter the ground. In the middle of it stands Renji, his sword dripping blood, his eyes cold but sorrowful. His Moon Mark glows faintly on his chest through torn armor.
Renji (thoughts):
“Each swing of my blade steals a piece of my life… yet still, I fight. For the clan. For duty.”
A sudden gust of wind scatters ashes. From the shadows, a lone figure approaches—Kael, cloak torn, blade on his shoulder, grinning despite wounds.
Kael:
“Still alive, Renji? Hah… Guess the Moon hasn’t taken you yet.”
Renji (coldly):
“…You again.” Close-up of Kael smirking, eyes sharp with mischief but hiding something softer.
Kael:
“Don’t sound so disappointed. You’d miss me if I stayed gone.”
Renji:
“I’d call it peace.”
Kael (mock hurt):
“Ouch. You wound me worse than any blade.”
They circle each other in the smoke. Their glowing Moon Marks pulse faintly, reacting to each other.
Renji (serious):
“Why follow me, Kael? You’re a rogue. You abandoned your lord. You’re my enemy.”
Kael (grinning):
“Maybe. But I like your company better than death.”
Suddenly, enemy soldiers—remnants of another clan—rush from the mist. Blades raised, eyes wild. Renji raises his sword, Kael cracks his neck, and they fight back to back.
Sound effects: CLANG! SHHHK! THUD!
Kael (laughing mid-fight):
“Admit it—you fight better with me beside you!”
Renji (cutting down an enemy, terse):
“Don’t mistake necessity for trust.”
All the soldiers fall. Silence. Renji breathes hard, lowering his sword. Kael leans on his, smirking but clearly exhausted.
Kael:
“Necessity, huh? Then keep needing me. I don’t mind.”
Renji glares but says nothing. His eyes flicker with conflict.
The air grows heavy. Moonlight thickens. A massive shadow looms across the battlefield—the Moon Wraith, a towering spirit of smoke and silver eyes, drawn by their combined Marks.
Moon Wraith (voice booming, eerie):
“Two warriors… bound by desire and death. Your souls shine brightest when entwined. Shall I test their worth?”
The Wraith descends, tendrils of shadow lashing out. Renji and Kael instinctively stand back-to-back, weapons raised. Their Moon Marks blaze like twin flames, illuminating the field.
Renji (steady, whispering to Kael):
“…Don’t leave my side.”
Kael (smiling softly, sword ready):
“Never planned to.”
Final splash page. Renji and Kael launch forward together, blades crossing in silver arcs as the monstrous Wraith roars. Their glowing Marks merge into one brilliant light.
Narration (Renji’s thoughts):
“Perhaps… this is why I still live. Not for duty. Not for honor. But for him.”
chapter 2: the bond of blades
The Moon Wraith looms over the battlefield—smoke-like body, glowing silver eyes, shifting claws. Its voice echoes like thunder.
Moon Wraith:
“Show me… if your hearts are stronger than the curse of the Moon.”
The Wraith lashes out tendrils of shadow. Renji slashes them apart with precise strikes. Kael leaps forward recklessly, cutting into the Wraith’s chest—but the blade passes through as if striking mist.
Kael (gritting teeth):
“Tch—damn thing’s not even solid!”
Renji (calm, focused):
“Then strike where it manifests strongest. The eyes.”
Kael grins despite the danger, glancing at Renji.
Kael:
“Always the strategist. Good thing I like fighting beside you.”
Renji (stern):
“Focus.”
The Wraith’s tendrils coil around Kael, lifting him off the ground. He struggles, blade falling from his hand. The spirit’s eyes flare as it whispers in his mind.
Moon Wraith (inside Kael’s thoughts):
“You fear abandonment… You cling to him because you are afraid to die alone.”
Kael grits his teeth, sweat dripping. He tries to resist.
Kael (thoughts, strained):
“Shut up… I don’t… care…”
Renji charges forward, slashing the tendrils apart in a brilliant arc of moonlight. He catches Kael as he falls, pulling him close for a brief moment.
Renji (fierce):
“Don’t let it break you. You’re stronger than that.”
Close-up: Kael looking up at Renji, surprised by the rare softness in his eyes.
They stand together again. Their Moon Marks glow brighter in unison, resonating as if connected. The Wraith recoils, hissing.
Moon Wraith:
“The glow… it strengthens when your hearts align…”
Kael (grinning despite pain):
“Hear that, Renji? Guess we make a good pair.”
Renji (tight-lipped, but not denying):
“…Stay in sync. On my mark.”
Double spread panel. They charge. Renji deflects the Wraith’s claws with perfect precision, opening its guard. Kael leaps over his shoulder, blade raised high, eyes burning with determination.
Kael (shouting):
“For once—trust me!”
He drives his sword straight into the Wraith’s eye. Light erupts, blasting the spirit apart in shards of moonlight.
Silence. The battlefield is empty again, save for ash and moonlight. The Wraith’s form dissolves into glowing dust that drifts away into the sky.
Kael (panting, leaning on his sword):
“Hah… Told you… we fight better together.”
Renji (quietly, almost a whisper):
“…Perhaps.”
Close-up of Kael smiling faintly. His wounds are bad, but his eyes linger on Renji with warmth.
Kael:
“One day, you’ll admit it. That you need me.”
Renji turns away, hiding the faintest flush across his face.
Renji (soft, to himself):
“…Maybe I already do.”
Wide shot of the battlefield under the moonlight. Renji and Kael walk side by side into the distance, their glowing Moon Marks fading but pulsing faintly in unison.
Narration (Renji’s thoughts):
“The Moon tests us… but perhaps, it is also binding us. Not just as warriors. But as something more.”
Chapter 3: Shadows of the Past
[Page 1]
Early morning. Renji and Kael walk along a misty riverbank, their swords sheathed. The battlefield from the previous night is gone, but ash floats in the air like fading ghosts.
Kael (stretching, grinning):
“Not bad for our first big fight together. You might actually be fun to have around.”
Renji (neutral, adjusting armor):
“Don’t get used to it.”
Kael snickers, clearly enjoying teasing Renji.
Close-up of Renji’s Moon Mark, still faintly glowing. Kael notices.
Kael:
“You think it’s safe now? After what we did?”
Renji (quiet, looking at the ground):
“The Moon Wraith isn’t the only danger. The mark… it draws attention.”
Kael frowns, taking Renji’s seriousness seriously for the first time.
Flashback panels. Renji as a boy, training under stern elders, his chest bare and Moon Mark appearing for the first time. He’s being lectured on honor, duty, and sacrifice.
Voice of Elder (narration-style):
“A warrior of the Moon is chosen not for desire, but for obedience. Your heart… will be tested.”
Next flashback: Kael leaving his lord’s castle, cloak over his shoulders, eyes burning with defiance.
Kael (voiceover):
“I won’t die for someone else’s lies. I’ll survive… even if it means walking alone.”
Back to present. Kael steps closer to Renji, tone softer.
Kael:
“You don’t have to follow them blindly, you know. Not anymore. Not with me.”
Renji (frowning, conflicted):
“…I swore an oath. But… maybe some oaths aren’t worth keeping at the cost of living.”
Panel: Kael’s hand brushes against Renji’s shoulder lightly, and Renji flinches—not from pain, but from the sudden closeness.
Suddenly, a squad of enemy warriors emerges from the mist, cloaked in black. Their leader, Commander Lysar, steps forward, Moon Mark glowing faintly on his arm.
Commander Lysar:
“Renji Arasaka… Kael Duskbane… your fates end here.”
Kael whispers to Renji:
“Looks like trouble follows us.”
Renji (narrowing eyes):
“We fight together… again.”
Double spread: They charge into battle. Kael’s style is wild and unpredictable; Renji’s is precise and calculated. Their Moon Marks pulse brighter as they fight in perfect synergy.
CLANG! SHHHK! WHOOM!
Renji deflects a strike aimed at Kael, Kael dives through enemy lines, slashing multiple foes in one swing.
Close-up: Renji notices something strange—Commander Lysar’s Moon Mark is connected to the Wraith’s energy. The Wraith’s presence hasn’t fully vanished.
Renji (thoughts, alarmed):
“It’s not over. It never ends…”
Kael notices Renji’s hesitation, nudges him:
“Snap out of it! Focus!”
They face Lysar together. The enemy strikes with deadly precision, but Renji and Kael’s teamwork overwhelms him.
Kael (taunting, mid-fight):
“Not bad, eh? Looks like we’re unstoppable when we work together.”
Renji (gritting teeth, smirking faintly):
“Don’t get cocky.”
Kael smirks back, their swords clashing with Lysar’s in perfect rhythm.
After Lysar is defeated, he vanishes mysteriously into smoke, leaving behind a whisper:
Lysar (fading):
“The Moon will remember… and so will your hearts…”
Renji looks at Kael, Moon Mark glowing faintly between them.
Renji (soft, almost to himself):
“We’ll face it… together.”
Kael (grinning, teasing again):
“Finally admitting you need me, huh?”
Renji turns away, a faint blush on his cheeks.
Wide shot: The two walk toward the rising sun, side by side. Their bond is strengthened, but the shadows of past oaths and enemies loom behind them.
Narration (Renji’s thoughts):
“The Moon tests us… but maybe it’s also teaching us. That to survive, we must fight together—not just with swords, but with hearts aligned.”
Chapter 4: Siege of Shadows
[Page 1]
Wide aerial panel: A distant city glows under the moon, walls tall and shining with enchanted barriers. From the surrounding forest, a dark army approaches, led by a warrior whose Moon Mark pulses violently.
Narration (Renji’s thoughts):
“The Moon Wraith’s influence grows… and it leaves its echoes everywhere.”
Kael leans on a tree branch, scanning the horizon, smirking as usual.
Kael:
“Looks like fun. You ready for a little chaos?”
Renji (grim):
“Chaos or not, we defend the city. Stay sharp.”
[Page 2–3]
The army charges. Explosions of shadow magic crack through the night. Citizens flee; city gates clang as guards try to repel the attackers.
Renji:
“Kael, take the left flank! I’ll handle the front.”
Kael (grinning):
“Copy that. Don’t die without me, stoic boy.”
Renji doesn’t reply, already sprinting forward, sword drawn, Moon Mark glowing brighter than ever.
[Page 4]
Kael fights on the left flank, leaping over a collapsing wall, slicing through shadow soldiers. He grins, adrenaline pumping.
Kael (shouting):
“Who said rogues can’t be heroes?!”
Close-up: Kael glances at Renji across the battlefield. His eyes soften briefly.
[Page 5]
Renji clashes with the enemy commander, a masked warrior wielding dual swords. Their blades spark, Moon Marks flashing in opposition.
Commander:
“Renji Arasaka… your loyalty will cost you everything.”
Renji (grim, focused):
“Then I’ll pay that price… on my terms.”
Panel: Sparks fly, swords lock, muscles straining, the Moon Mark on Renji’s chest flaring brighter than ever.
[Page 6–7]
Kael fights back-to-back with a small squad of defenders. One soldier is about to be struck—Kael jumps, spinning, catching him just in time.
Kael (panting):
“You okay? Thought I’d let you die? Hah… not a chance.”
The rescued soldier nods, awed. Kael smirks, brushing dust off his shoulder, then glances at the front lines where Renji battles the commander.
Kael (to himself, quietly):
“Don’t die, Renji…”
[Page 8–9]
The commander lands a heavy blow, knocking Renji to his knees. He’s bleeding, chest glowing fiercely with Moon Mark energy. Kael bursts through enemy lines to reach him.
Kael (shouting):
“RENJI!”
Renji looks up, momentarily stunned, and Kael grabs his arm, pulling him to his feet. Their swords cross in a synchronized counterattack.
Renji (breathing hard):
“…Together, then.”
Kael (grinning, intense):
“Exactly. No one takes you while I’m around.”
[Page 10]
Double-page spread: Their Moon Marks blaze in unison, releasing a shockwave that knocks back enemy soldiers and disrupts the commander’s attacks. The battlefield is illuminated in silver light.
Commander (staggering, shocked):
“What… is this power?!”
Renji:
“Our bond. Something your lonely heart will never understand.”
Kael chuckles, brushing blood from his cheek, eyes locked on Renji.
[Page 11]
The commander flees into the forest, injured, leaving the city temporarily safe. Renji collapses onto his knees, exhausted.
Kael (kneeling beside him, smiling warmly):
“Told you, stoic boy. You don’t get to die without me.”
Renji glances up at him, chest heaving, a faint blush coloring his cheeks.
Renji (softly):
“…I… I suppose I need you.”
Kael (grinning widely, teasing):
“Finally admitting it! Took you long enough.”
They share a quiet, fleeting moment as the moonlight reflects off their swords and glowing Marks.
[Page 12]
Wide shot: The city at dawn, defenders repairing gates, smoke rising, citizens cautiously returning. Renji and Kael walk side by side, exhausted but alive.
Narration (Renji’s thoughts):
“The Moon tests us… still, it feels less like a curse now. Perhaps it is teaching us something more: that to survive… we need each other.”
Kael bumps Renji’s shoulder playfully, and for once, Renji doesn’t push him away.
Kael:
“Next time, though… we fight in style. A little less doom-and-gloom, yeah?”
Renji (smirking faintly):
“…Agreed.”
[Chapter 4 End] ....
Suddenly, a spectral figure emerges from the center of the temple—a Moon Sentinel, armor made of moonlight, eyes glowing. Its voice echoes through the ruins.
Moon Sentinel:
“Renji Arasaka… Kael Duskbane… you walk a path of fire and blood. The Moon Marks bind you… but you have the choice: follow duty… or follow desire.”
Kael steps forward, smirking but tense:
“Choice? Sounds like you’re just trying to scare us.”
Renji grips his sword, the glow of his Mark intensifying.
“…It’s no
Chapter 6 – The Wraith’s Lieutenant
[Page 1]
Scene: Mountain pass at dusk. Villagers flee as shadows crawl over the rocks. Kael and Renji arrive on horseback.
Kael (grinning, readying sword):
“Well, this looks fun. Shadows, screaming villagers, and a death trap. Just how I like it.”
Renji (serious, eyes on the hill):
“Focus. The lieutenant is here. His Moon Mark glows stronger than any we’ve seen.”
[Page 2]
The lieutenant emerges, towering, Moon Mark burning on his chest. Shadows swirl around him, forming weaponized limbs.
Lieutenant:
“You dare interfere, children of the Moon? Your light will be extinguished.”
Renji (gripping sword, glowing mark):
“Not today.”
[Page 3]
Kael and Renji split, flanking the lieutenant. Sparks of silver light fly as swords clash with shadow limbs.
Kael (mid-fight, laughing):
“You really don’t play fair with your size, huh?”
Renji (blocking a heavy strike, tense):
“He’s strong… we need to synchronize our Marks fully.”
[Page 4–5]
Double-page spread: Renji and Kael stand back-to-back, eyes locked, Moon Marks blazing. They merge their energies into a brilliant silver aura, sending shockwaves that knock the lieutenant off balance.
Kael:
“See? Told you, unstoppable when we work together.”
[Page 6]
Final strike. They leap together, swords crossing in mid-air, slicing through the lieutenant. Shadows dissipate, Moon Mark fades, villagers cheer.
Renji (panting, to Kael):
“We’re stronger together… I understand that now.”
Kael (grinning, teasing):
“Finally admitting it. Took you long enough, stoic boy.”
