POEM STARTER
‘Bees offer honey far more readily than they sting.’
Write a poem that begins with this line. What themes can this metaphor reflect?
Littleness
Bees offer honey
far more readily than they sting.
A girl would rather kill the birds
than listen to them sing.
A boy lives in peace,
knowing that one day he’ll be king.
To fly, you must have wings,
or a job that brings.
In other universes,
ants bend down
and pick up humans, saying,
“What a small thing.”
Somewhere,
there is a girl unable to leave
because of her mother’s
desperate cling.
I prefer winter
over summer,
or happiness,
or spring.
When we are lost,
we unlace our shoestrings.
What is marriage without love,
not just without a ring?
If you don’t look,
how will you understand
what you’re seeing?
I say: I am real,
and I am a human being.
The kindness you’re showing
won’t stop him from fleeing.
Think about it,
life without him
might be much more freeing.
