WRITING OBSTACLE
Write a fast-paced scene that takes place during a rush hour.
There doesn't need to be a dramatic plot, but think about how you can create and maintain a busy and rushed feeling in a short story.
Heartbeat of the Morning Commute
The platform thrums under the stiff morning light. Footsteps tap out urgent rhythms as commuters edge forward, eyes fixed on the far rails. A tinny voice crackles through the speakers, calling the 08:07 to Central Station. Every heartbeat feels amplified in the expectant hush.
Bags bump and shoulders brush in the surge toward the arriving train. Metal wheels screech on the rails, ratcheting pace into the air. A tide of coats and scarves swells through the carriage doors. In that moment, space vanishes—only momentum remains.
Inside, bodies press close, offering no room for hesitation. The stale scent of yesterday’s papers mingles with fresh coffee in paper cups. A child clutches her mother’s hand, wide-eyed at the speeding blur beyond the window. Conversation is impossible over the clatter and rumble.
Door’s clang shut with mechanical finality. The train shudders into motion, lurching into the tunnel’s darkness. Every carriage is a capsule of silent urgency, strangers bound by one shared mission: to be somewhere else at exactly the right second.
Minutes stretch and contract as stations flicker by. Announcements and brake hiss punctuate the trip. At Liverpool Central, the crowd exudes readiness once more—antiklang before dispersal. And in the collective exhale, life’s morning sprint begins anew.
