Corporal Gio Campbell wipes the fog from the goggles of his military issued BioSuit as he steps out from the Transport shuttle and onto the crash site. Gio, along with the rest of his Combat Cleanup Unit (CCU) will be conducting a clean sweep and investigation of a downed Lunar Star Fighter that crashed 50 miles south of Halcyon City in a remote mountain range at 0100 that same morning.

As Gio and his unit make their way from the tram to the wreckage, Gio begins to hear rumblings from the other crews already present.

“We haven’t had a downed star fighter this close to the border since before the treaty..” Gio overhears a Field Super from another crew shouting over the harsh winds to one of his subordinates. “There wasn’t even a scheduled patrol out here!” Another yells.

“I need you to get onto this fucking flight deck pronto and find out if any of those motherfuckers are still alive!” Gio jumps to attention as he realizes that last yell is directed at him.

Gio had been briefed on the situation by Staff Sargent Gomez on their tram ride over to the crash site so although he was violently hungover from the night before, he had a basic understanding of what he was walking into. “After this fucker went down there was a distress signal triggered from inside the fucking flight deck,” Gomez yells to Gio over the noise of the Transport Shuttle soaring through the snowy terraformed lunar mountains. Gomez had always been known to use the word fuck more than it was necessary but Gio thought that it was one of Gomez’s only redeeming qualities. It sort of reminded Gio of home, but besides that Gio thought Gomez was a real Type-A asshole. “..first responders arrived to the crash site and not a single one of these fuckers was still breathing and to top that the fucking flight deck that called in the fucking distress signal is sealed the fuck shut! I’m talking sealed as fuck! No fucking comms access to the door and we have no fucking way of knowing what the fuck went on in there! That’s why I need you to pop that fucker open!” _Now that was a lot of fucks, even for Gomez. _Gio thinks to himself.

Fortunately for the trapped crew of this Star Fighter, there was one thing Gio could do better than any living man in the entire Star System. Gio had the uncanny ability to get in and out of any place no matter how impenetrable. It’s been that way for as long as he can remember.

_It’s just another cleanup job. _Gio thinks to himself as he mentally rolls his eyes at the world._ Why is everyone here so goddamn uptight_.

After three years in the Lunar Navy, Gio believes he’s seen it all and he’s certainly seen his fair share. Before the military Gio and his twin brother, Merrin were two of the most notorious criminals in all of Halcyon City (even if no one really knew they were behind some of the largest crimes the city had seen.. they were just that good). But that was a decade ago and Merrin’s been dead for just as long.

Out of all of the “jobs” to chose from in the Lunar Navy, Gio enlisted into the CCU for two reasons. First, he needed to be able keep a low profile, so any combat unit was out of the picture. _I’d stick out like a sore thumb among those bright eyed bushy tailed pixies. _Gio thought to himself as he sloppily filled out the enlistment forms. Second, the Lunar Republic has been at peace for the last decade so there was almost never any type of “combat cleanup” to be had. Just a bunch of botched training drills and and the occasional downed Star Fighter to clean up (plus Gio gets to pick a lock from time to time, which has always been his favorite thing to do). This type freedom gave Gio every excuse to drown his sorrows in booze and still be able to collect a decent paycheck. His “job” if that’s what you want to call it, was simply a means for Gio to escape his past and forget the pain of losing the only family he’s ever known. Gio may be in the military but he sure doesn’t care about saving lives, he’s just trying to kill time before his old life finally catches up with him.

Hours go by, the rest of the CCU is finished collecting the corpses from the original wreckage and is loading them onto the Transport Shuttles to be burried. Gio, who is by himself right outside the flight deck finally manages to open the sealed doors and make his way into the flight deck.

“I’m in, stand-by” Gio confidently relays to Gomez into his comms device. _Woulda had it opened sooner if my head wasn’t still throbbing. _Gio thinks to himself, as he squeezes through the slight breach he made in the sliding doors of the entrance. When he enters, he is instantly horrified by what he see’s. The entire crew inside is dead, brutally murdered.

“How can this b…” Gio mutters to himself as he tries to stop himself from throwing up last night’s liquor into his BioSuit mask. Atleast twenty corpses fill the flight deck, blood everywhere.

Gio can’t believe what he’s looking at. He’s seen more than his share of dead bodies but this was different. From the looks of it, the crew was poisoned. Most of them looked to have vomited up blood, possibly from some type of gas in the vents.. Gio panics at this thought for a moment before he remembers that the BioSuit he’s wearing will keep out any would be contaminants, as if that is any silver lining for the memory of this moment he now has embedded into his brain.

_But why, who would do something like this?_ Gio wonders.

Now rummaging through the bodies in search of any signs of life, Gio hears a voice crackle through his comms “Campbell, what the fuck do you see in there? Campbell!”

With a tremble in his words, Gio responds “Yes sir, zero survivors so far. This was no accident sir..” Gio pauses to once again hold back his own vomit. “Looks to be some type of chemical warfa-“ Gio stops in his tracks as he turns over the last corpse, his blood runs cold. The eyes staring back at him… are his own. Except that Gio’s not the one lying dead on the flight deck floor, eyes bloodshot, dark dried blood staining the corner of his mouth running down the side his cheek. He almost didn’t recognize him at first but now there is zero doubt in his mind, that dead body is his brother.. Merrin.. Gio stares in silence.

“Campbell, are you with me? Campbell? Campbell!? What the Fuck!” The comms ring again to no answer..
