STORY STARTER
The Rumour
Write a short story that centres around the spreading of a rumour.
Brainrott
“Did you hear about Amanda?”
“No, what happened?”
“Girl—you’re so behind! C’mon how do you not know?”
I raise my brow and look at her face.
I never get informed about anything, how does she not_ _know that?
Amy tilts her head and scoots closer to me, looking around if anyones listening.
“Ok come on—I’ll tell you”
Almost in a whisper she begins, her eyes wide with excitement,
“So, Sophie told me that Amanda is pregnant!”
My eyes narrow as I cross my arms.
“Really? Sophie told you that?”
“Yea I’m dead serious! And listen—theres far more to this!”
I sigh and give up arguing with her.
“Sophie said that Oliva told her that she saw Mr. Kerning and Amanda go to the bathroom after every class.
AND—that would all makes sense why Amanda is not failing science—because she’s the little ‘love dove’ of that stupid teacher”
I can’t believe I’m listening to this. I can’t believe Amy actually believes in this junk.
“So basically, you know this because Sophie told you, because Olivia told Sophie?”
“Yep!”
“How the hell you know it’s true?”
Amy squints her eyes, tilting her head a bit forward.
“Oh come on! Don’t be all so serious—just like my mother! Listen, my girlies would never make stuff up or lie to me.”
“Well then how the hell does Olivia know? She ain’t following them to the restrooms—is she now?”
Amy rolls her eyes, as if I’m the dumb one here.
“Olivia knows because first of all, she’s in Amanda’s class, and second of all, Olivia’s friend—Jaye I believe? Anyways, her friend said that she saw them go to the bathroom and smooch.”
I’m done with this nonsense. I look at Amy dead in the eye, and stand up from the lunch table.
“Hey where ya going?”
“To the bathroom. I don’t wanna listen to this brainrott. Amanda’s a very nice person—I know her.”
“Welp—she’s pretty nice in getting herself
pre—“
“Oh be quiet!”
———
I come back after a couple minutes of wondering around the hallways rather than actually using the toilet, and Amy is no where to be found.
Atleased, she’s not where we where sitting at.
I spot her a few tables away, sitting with a bunch of other girls. I don’t know them so well, but they’re in Amy’s cheer team.
“Oh here she comes..”
As I approach the table, suddenly I hear their whispers,
“Hush or that dork will hear,”
With caution, I sit beside Amy, and she looks at me like we barely know each other.
“Hey guys,”
I feel their venomous eyes glare at me as if I’m made out of nothing else but trash.
“Look who’s talking—the poor girly pop who can’t afford her own food but rather relies on the cafeteria junk”
All of them laugh.
And I’m confused.
I’m not poor. Am I? I’m just too lazy to make my own food.
“Excuse me?”
“You heard me,”
One of them giggles,
“Poor rat has hearing issues. Probably will end up the same way as Amanda.”
I stare at them. I stare at Amy, who helpessly looks at me with a smile smirking up her face.
“Why where you so protective of her? What—you hiding something too?”
Tiny sweat drops roll from my forhead, and my cheeks turn boiling hot.
I stand up once again.
Without any last words, I leave.
I simply leave.
Poor Amanda.
Probably has it worse.
If I get a chance—I’ll go talk to her.
