Break A Leg
“As I heard the last wolf cry, I knew it was over…” A hush settles over the audience as Gareth’s last line rings out.
Max shuffles out on stage, dressed as a wolf. He’s sweaty under the costume and spotlight. He turns to the painted moon on the backdrop and howls. His howl is interrupted by a groan and he clutches his stomach. Then he crumples to floor.
A little over acted, but a good end, thinks Gareth.
There’s a pause, a couple snickers from teens in the audience, and then applause.
The curtain closes. When it opens again, the entire cast and crew of fourth graders is on stage to take a bow. A few parents whistle and hoot.
It’s only when Max fails to make his way forward for the leads’ curtain call, that people notice he hasn’t gotten back up.
Cheers turn into screams. Frantic parents and teachers try to revive Max, but it’s no use.
Gareth walks calmly off stage to slip a small bottle into his backpack. Without Max around to outshine him, he’ll be a star in no time.
