Time
24 hours they repeat continuously on the news. People are going crazy. Some hidding in a bunker. Some calling their loved one. Some holding their breath for it to be fake news. But they know, we all know. I sit on the beach where the water meets the sand. I look out to the horizon and let a small laugh bubble out of me. While everyone is spending there last day crying, wishing its fake. Theirs me. Who’s sitting on the beach enjoying the view as I do every night. Listening to Lana del rays music. Humming along to the lyrics. I’d prefer to enjoy my last moments breathing in the fresh air. Smelling the saltiness but yet sweetness of the ocean. My body is surrounded by the warmth of the sun yet my face is shaded by my umbrella. Water comes up and tickles my toes making a shiver run down my body. Like the people that are rushing to get off the beach to get to loved ones. I can’t blame them. I’m just not thinking like them. The sun is setting now. My phone starts to ring. I answer. “Hello.” A wrecking sob comes from the other side of the line. “Jackie.” My mother calls out. “Hi…..mom.” I answer back. She continues to cry. I sit there listening. “Please come home.” She asks from the other side. “No.” I respond. I’m not going to put my life on hold for something I can’t change. I’m going to enjoy these last moments. My feet in the sand. The breeze hitting my body in light waves. And the smell of the air filling my lungs. “Please. Sweetie…..please.” I hold my breath for a second closing my eyes. Saying my goodbyes on the inside. “I love you mama.” I say before I hit the big red button that ends the call. I power my phone off. Looking back out towards the horizon. Hours past. My body slowed with each breath. Sinking into the now cold sand. I’d fallen asleep. My eyes now open. The sky has little to no light. I power on my phone. It buzzes and buzzes. Texts from friends. Texts from family. A sly smile takes form on my face I look to the time 5:00 am in the morning it read. 5 hours till the asteroid hits. I sit up and push my self from the ground standing on my feet shaking them out as I get a feel of them again. I walk towards the water til water starts slowly raising higher and higher on me. It reaches my neck. I turn back to the place I was once sitting. Giving it one last look as my phone sits on my towel. Lighting up. I slowly sink my self in the water. Making peace with my end. I breath the water into my lungs. It stings but slowly fades as my eyes close.
