WRITING OBSTACLE
Write a fast-paced scene that takes place during a rush hour.
There doesn't need to be a dramatic plot, but think about how you can create and maintain a busy and rushed feeling in a short story.
Rush Hour
Late to work. Again. I swerve onto the freeway, barely looking to my left as I merge right. They’ll brake. They always do.
On the freeway. Music blasting. Cars whip past my side, trucks, too. I’m going fast but the trucks go faster sometimes. I honk at someone who cuts me off as I swerve into another late.
I honk at someone else, and … The middle finger. He shows me his middle finger and snarls at me.
Road rage rush hour.
I swerve into another lane narrowly missing a schoolbus. The guy didn’t follow me, I don’t think. Just aimed at me. Threatening. Should I brake check him? No, just get to work.
But the gall … Which car was it again?
That’s my exit, no time to think about it. Time to get to work.
