STORY STARTER
Write a poem that includes this line:
'The mask is slipping'.
‘Til Dawn
Here, I lay in fear as I feel the mak slipping. I consume and have made this mask to be one with my face so they don’t recognize me when night crawls, solar lights come up, sun sets, and cicadas don’t know when to rest. I sleep to my uncontrol throughout the day when the sun arises and glistens on my face, but when all else fades some thing else wants to come out and play. I lay in bed now looking at my nightstand. I see the bottle of pills calling out my name, I take a couple to ease the pain, then I hear the voices from far away. They creep into my room, setting their stage, I don’t know if I should focus my eyes or look away. I feel my body tense and I am unable to move, paralysis at it’s best- I’m asleep, but it still keeps me awake. The mask I consumed with sips of water is one that is slipping away. Now with it revealing my face, they have recognized me and won’t go away. They come closer and out of my fear, I peel my skin away. Simulation, reality, dreams.. I don’t know which way. I can’t understand what’s happening to me, so I begin to peel my face. No mask is left, now moon is set. ‘Til dawn I lay in silence and burn ‘til I can wake. I come back to my sense, run to the mirror across my flower vase, I take a good look. All skin is gone, all bones I see. It’s not the mask that slipped off. It’s my sanity and own flesh I ripped away.
