Date Crasher

Standing in the field with sun sky high and no shade sounded like a good idea for a picnic date until I started sweating. Honestly sometimes I think I'm slowly losing intelligence šŸ˜‚.

In the distance we could see grey clouds rolling in this direction. It was still bright, sunny, and hot as ever here, but we decided to end the date early before we got caught.

I stood up and was trying to tuck some stuff into my backpack, but the sun was so blinding, I couldn't see, and so I dropped my car keys in the grass. I went to bend down and look for them, when I saw a dark figure loom over the grass, and pick up the keys.

No, there was no hand. The dark figure, it was humanoid, but it was not a solid object. It was... a phantom, no, a shadow. Was it my shadow? Couldn't be, I hadn't picked up the keys yet, and my date was still wrapping the basket and cooler in the blanket. There was nobody else around.

The "shadow's hand" grasped the keys and whipped it away. I whipped my head around standing up quickly to follow it, but my hair flew into my face and I couldn't see until I moved it out of the way. By then, both the shadow and my keys had disappeared. Was I going crazy? What was that? I turned to my date dazed, when I glanced down and his shadow stood out. I looked down to find mine.

But I could not. I had no shadow. My shadow was gone. My shadow stole my

keys. What the heck?! I must've passed out from the heat and I'm dreaming this. I looked back up to my date who had asked me what was wrong, and apparently noticed nothing.

All of a sudden, something ripped the basket out of his hands.

"HEY! What the heck?!"

His shadow had broken off from his feet, ran in front of him, and grabbed the basket from him. We both stared in awe as the shadow stole the basket, running in the seemingly opposite direction that my shadow went off with my keys.

We both stared at the ground, our jaws hung open in shock. We didn't say anything. We didn't do anything. We just... stood there.
