The Narrator
She huddled around the fire, instinctively dodging the smoke. Avoiding the sting of smoke in her eyes. Everything else was still. The fire didn’t listen to the bounds of silence, it continued to dance in the darkness. Her sparkling eyes followed the choreography of the fiery embers. The silence between the two was deafening, as they could feel each other’s hostility, yet tension was denied.
“I already said I’m fine,” she said lying through her teeth. If the voice in her head could stare daggers, her words would be bleeding. Unfortunately he can’t, so his words will have to suffice. She sighed, right before telling him what was wrong.
“Nothing’s wrong!”
And the sky is purple! You’ve been silent all day, I can comment on what’s happening but it’s not like I can read your mind! W-what, let me guess you didn’t like the camping idea-
“It’s not that and you know that!”
I-I’m-I’m just-. . . . Trying to be funny.
“Well now’s not the time”
She just wouldn’t give up the truth. As much as she denied it he still knew there was-
“-Just be quiet! All you do is talk. All you do is ruin my life, making everyone think I’m crazy. And what do you do? Just keep at it! Words are wasted on those who don’t listen. People like you!”
She snapped.
“Don’t-“
. . . . . I’m sorry, I’ll stop. . . I’m. . . I’m just worried about you. If that’s. . . If that’s what will make you happy.
