The Hourglass Turns

Former Sergeant First Class Renya Perez stood near the edge where the shelter met the sands of Ghalaran. She didn’t consider herself the sergeant who landed here so many years ago. The sands had smoothed it away as they had the decals of the three ships that crashed here with her. The sun bleached away all but the stoic metal. Reyna could smell rust in the air, and knew this would mean the rainy s...

Alone

An arrow flashed by and rattled through the underbrush, narrowly missing a hare and startling it. It bolted off through the snow and disappeared safely from Joseph’s view. He cursed his aim as he walked off to search for his arrow. Ammunition was precious or here, and he could little afford to throw away arrows for nothing. After looking for a few minutes, he recovered his black-feathered arrow an...

Desolate

With a swift movement of her hand she rubbed away some sand on her cheek, that had started to itch her. She wasnā€˜t to thorough, as sand got everywhere out here. Sheā€˜d been out to collect animals from her traps and set them up again. It was a good day. She had two rabbits and another sort of small rodent. She didnā€˜t care about what it exactly was. I’m Good, Actually.

I’ve never been a fan of people. That goes for everyone, that’s why I moved. People are unpredictable.

Weathers aren’t. You have psychologists for people. Not meteorologists and forecasts the way you do for the weather cycle. Today, it’ll rain hard until maybe 10 pm.

Hourglass Figures

I’m the woman inside the hourglass

Shoveling sand down the drain

Giant fingers tap the glass

Claustrophobia surrounds me

As my heart races too fast

Every grain is meticulous

Each a millionth of a second

They slip from my grasp in turn

To the funnel they are beckoned

My captivity’s controller

Much crueler than he see...

Sand. Two thousand four hundred and seventy eight cycles. That was the last time rain graced the dunes of Cephtalium. Sand. It was a sudden deluge, a violent torrent that took the lives of a few hundred inhabitants of our underground city before the engineers were able to seal off the upper level. There was little mourning for the deceased since the upper level belonged to the poor, criminal, and ...

Alone

I didn’t know what to think about this place. It was lonely and dreadful, kind of like how I felt right now.

But so was home. This desert had kept me safe for more years than I have fingers for. I will forever be thankful for her safety.

But this abandoned place had a different feeling. It was a feeling of uncertainty. And that wasn’t a feeling I wanted to feel.

So as quickly and as quiet as I ha...
