A Heavy Crown
Winner - 3rd

SJ Randolph

6 min read

The crown that sits upon my head is priceless- an heirloom passed from generations before me to the many generations to come.

It’s fashioned of precious gold and stunning rubies, pointed sharply at the tip like the edge of a blade, each gem glinting like freshly spilled blood.

Personally I find it a bit gaudy.

But I suppose it’s necessary- after all, how else do you know who to kill?

“Your Hi...

The Woman That She Used To Be
Winner - 2nd

SJ Randolph

1 min read

There’s a stranger in my mirror

I wonder who she is

She wears the same blue eyes as me

She’s draped in a similar skin

But there’s something different in those eyes

A sadness soft as snow

A hesitance- a self defense?

A heart that’s laced in woe

Where did that vicious woman go?

Who took her claws and teeth?

Where can I find her fire, her drive?

What’s hidden underneath?

I want to scream at her,...

The Enemy

She was already scratching at the door when I locked the bolt in place.

Furious, desperate. Dangerous.

Shaking, covered in sweat, I let myself slide to the floor as I struggled to catch a breath.

“Nightmare,” I whispered to myself, barely making a sound as I choked on panic.

It had to be a nightmare. I must’ve fallen asleep on the train again, and I’ll wake up with a kink in my neck for the mile w...

Some people say you meet Jesus

On the other side of the sky

Others say it’s Krishna or Allah

That greet you when you die

I don’t know much of religion

But I know how it feels to be free

To feel the world around you

In perfect harmony

I feel it in the sunshine

I smell it on the grass

I taste it on your smile

And I hear it in your laugh

It warms me when I’m frigid

It lulls me off to nod

That ...

I was your shelter, never your home.

But I was there when you needed me.

When the wind whipped your face and the rain chilled your bones, I held myself sturdy for you.

And it rained for what felt like forever.

Long enough for your skin to warm

Your mind to clear

Your eyes to wander.

I built this shelter from sticks and rope,

of course the mansion look nice.

The white picket fence is new and fres...

The End
Winner - 2nd

SJ Randolph

Don’t tell me that you never

Tried to skip right to the end

Just to get away from

Every twist and turn and bend

We all know the shortcut

We all know the cost

But no one really thinks of that

When they’re cold and scared and lost

Don’t judge me for my shortcut

You don’t know the road I braved

Every step a landmine

Every breadcrumb saved

And here I am, on greener land

But still the dead ends...

Do Not Assume
Winner - 3rd

SJ Randolph

3 min read

My father was a sadist.

He enjoyed tormenting me, belittling.

He liked to get a reaction.

He liked to see me cry.

So when I drove that knife into his chest, I didn’t shed a single tear.

But he did.

He wept and begged and carried on, much in the same way I used to at the hands of his abuse.

It was strange to see him that way.

Weak.

Vulnerable.

And in that moment, I finally connected t...
